Healthy diets can fight chronic diseases

A new study shows that following a Mediterranean diet can help individuals tackle cancer, heart disease and other chronic illnesses.

According to a study published in theBritish Medical Journal (BMJ), strict adherence to a diet rich in fruit and vegetables protects individuals against various forms of chronic diseases and promotes public health.

Findings revealed that the abovementioned diet not only reduces the mortality rate secondary to heart disease but also lowers the risk of developing cancer and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.

University of Florence researchers encourage living on a Mediterranean diet as a primary preventative measure against major chronic diseases.

The Mediterranean diet implies exercise, activity, healthy nutrition and natural products. It normally follows a dietary pattern in which fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, fish and olive oil are the main ingredients, while red meat, dairy products and alcohol are almost never included in the diet.
